The Development of Christian Liturgy through History

The history of Christian liturgy traces back to the practices of the early Christian church in the 1st century, following the example of Jesus and the apostles in worship gatherings. As the church grew and developed, various forms of liturgical practices emerged, influenced by cultural contexts, theological emphases, and ecclesiastical structures. The early church Fathers played a significant role in shaping Christian liturgy, emphasizing the centrality of the Eucharist, baptism, and the reading of Scripture in worship. Over the centuries, different Christian traditions (such as Eastern Orthodox, Roman Catholic, Anglican, and Protestant) have developed distinct liturgical expressions while sharing common elements in their worship practices.

Scripture: Acts 2:42 – “They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.”
