Navigating Christianity’s Response to Racism and Discrimination

The history of Christian responses to racism and discrimination reveals a mix of positive actions taken by some Christian individuals and communities to advocate for equality and justice, as well as a troubling history of complicity and perpetuation of racist ideologies and practices. Christians are called to love their neighbors as themselves (Matthew 22:39) and to show no partiality (James 2:1), yet throughout history, some have failed to live up to these teachings in the context of racism and discrimination. The challenge for Christians today is to actively confront and dismantle any forms of racism or discrimination, acknowledging the inherent dignity and worth of every person as created in the image of God (Genesis 1:27).
