Christian Abolitionists: The Role of Christianity in the Abolitionist Movement

Christianity played a significant role in the abolitionist movement, with many abolitionists citing their Christian beliefs as the foundation for their activism. The idea that all human beings are created in the image of God and deserve dignity and freedom resonated strongly with Christian abolitionists. They pointed to scriptures such as Galatians 3:28, which states “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus,” as evidence of the equality of all individuals in the eyes of God. This belief motivated many Christians to fight against the institution of slavery and advocate for its abolition.
